Children's workshop : This will be a fun and informative introduction to Indian
classical dance. Students will learn how to stamp their feet in interesting
rhythmic patterns. They will learn how to coordinate the hands, feet, arms,
legs, and eyes in executing basic steps. We will cover some of the hand gestures
and use these in miming out the words of a song. Students will experience how
different animals and characters like demons, warriors, kings, and princesses
are portrayed in Indian dance. This class requires no previous experience in
dance. Appropriate dress includes long, stretchy pants and a T-shirt. No shorts,
skirts or tight jeans please. Students of Indian origin may choose to wear
a salwar kameez.
Adult class (age 14 and up): This class will provide an overview of the body
movements and expressive language of Indian classical dance. It will provide
a comparison between Indian dance and Western dance forms, which will be of
interest to students of ballet, jazz and modern dance, but it will also be
accessible to students without any previous dance experience. Students will
learn some of the basic steps of Bharatanatyam, how audible rhythmic patterns
are created by stamping the feet and how hand gestures and facial expressions
are used to convey emotions and ideas. Appropriate dress includes long, stretchy
pants (like yoga pants or jazz pants) and a T-shirt. No shorts, skirts or tight
jeans, please. Students of Indian origin may choose to wear a salwar kameez.
