Arijit Mahalanabis began his musical training under Shahana Banerjee in 1980 at the age of 8. In 1981, his family moved to the United States. Since 1981, he has received sporadic direction from various teachers, but has largely taught himself the art of Hindustani vocal music through careful study and analysis of recorded music and literature. Between 1989 and 1995, while studying at Penn State University, Arijit was instrumental in maintaining and growing a classical music society called Raaga, which brought together practitioners of Hindustani and Carnatic music. Since 1999, Arijit has been studying Dhrupad, Dhamar and Khayal with Shantha Benegal. He has given many concerts and lecture demonstrations on Hindustani music throughout the United States. In the Seattle area, he was the classical music lead of Pratidhwani through its first two years of rapid growth and is now actively involved in Ragamala.
